The Necessity of a Modern State of Israel
The Necessity of a Modern State of Israel
It is essential to have a modern state of Israel, especially in light of the current dramatic uptick in antisemitism throughout the world, particularly on university campuses in North America and Europe. Historical events have consistently demonstrated that there is no place in the world where Jews can feel completely safe from persecution, regardless of the apparent stability of their surroundings.
The Peril of Safety Illusions
History provides numerous examples of Jewish communities living under the illusion of safety. For instance, many Jews in Germany before World War II felt comfortable and well-assimilated into German society. No one could have predicted the drastic changes that would soon follow. Similarly, today we witness Jews facing violent attacks in European and North American cities, where such incidents were previously unimaginable even a decade ago. These attacks have become a catalyst for an even greater influx of Jewish individuals to Israel for safety and refuge.
Why Israel as a Homeland?
Israel serves as the homeland and haven for Jews, providing a sanctuary where they can live without fear of persecution. Like other ethnic groups, Jews deserve a homeland, a place where they can preserve their culture, language, and traditions without fear of discrimination. Unlike the Palestinians, who were offered an alternative to Jordan rather than an entire country, Jews have the right to a state of their own.
Comparison with Other Modern States
The establishment of modern states such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Czech Republic, and Kyrgyzstan occurred at different times and for various reasons. Saudi Arabia, for example, acquired its present form in 1902 after the rise of Zionism, primarily due to the military actions of Abdulaziz bin Rahman. Jordan (then known as Trans-Jordan) also had a similar timeline, declining to abandon the idea of eliminating Israel.
It is important to note that asking whether these states were necessary can seem absurd. However, the analogous question about Israel's necessity does not receive the same level of scrutiny or criticism. This double standard highlights a broader issue in how different nations and populations are evaluated based on their unique historical and cultural contexts.
The necessity of a modern state of Israel, therefore, cannot be overstated. It is a critical and vital safeguard for the Jewish people, ensuring their safety, cultural preservation, and overall well-being in an increasingly hostile world.
