The Last Party: Unveiling the End of The Girls and the Friends' Final Goodbyes

Season 6,Episode 2, The Goodbye Tour, can be considered the second-to-last episode and was my favorite. This episode serves as a brilliant summary of the life journeys of the key Girls characters in a short party sequence. Here’s a closer look at each character's final moments, the end of their friendships, and what The Goodbye Tour means in the context of The Girls.

Shoshanna: A Journey of Love and Engagement

Ironically, Shoshanna Shapiro's final party is her engagement party. Shosh, as she’s affectionately called, was notably absent for most of Season 6. The reason? She was busy getting her life together, meeting a cute guy at a cupcake vending machine, falling in love, and getting engaged. This unexpected turn of events reveals that Shoshanna, who was once perceived as a giant mess, might be finding her way.

The episode showcases the complete deterioration of the once inseparable group. During the height of the party, the truth is laid bare in a tiny bathroom. The four friends no longer hang out together or even love each other. Their relationships have transitioned into what Shosh terms “frienemies.”

Frienemies Forever: The Reality of Their Relationships

Shoshanna’s truth is harsh but real. She suggests that they all agree to call it “frienemies” to accept what their relationships have become. Not all of them have grown up; they have simply grown apart. Hannah, Jessa, and Rita's friendships have reached a breaking point, but despite this, they choose to end their party with a little fun.

Jessa and Hannah: Apologies and Farewells

After Shosh concludes her part in the friendships, Jessa, who stole Hannah's boyfriend Adam, makes a heartfelt apology. Although it's unlikely that they will be together forever, Jessa's effort is commendable. Hannah also cries, saying, “We were all just doing our best. Our best was awful,” to which Jessa responds with tears of her own. Both decide to hang out, eat cupcakes, and dance, knowing that their friendship, though ending, can have a bittersweet conclusion with a little fun.

Marnie: Perfectionism and Unstable Love

Marnie, notorious for her imperfections, basal narcissism, and her inability to form or maintain a real love connection, is caught in a cycle of failed relationships throughout the series. In a nutshell, her engagement party behavior defines her ability to form any real connection. She has been repeatedly dumped by her long-term college love, her soon-to-be husband, and her hot musician. Her final relationship with Ray—the one she least expected—ultimately ends.

Elijah: Devoted Friendship

As The Girls culminates, Elijah emerges as Hannah's most devoted true friend. They've been through everything together, and Elijah's love is shown by singing her to sleep. This moment symbolizes the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new journey for the characters.

Saying Goodbye to the City

Although there is one more episode left in The Girls, The Goodbye Tour is my absolute favorite. I will miss The Girls, but I look forward to all the amazing things Lena Dunham will create now that her work with The Girls is over.
