Navigating the Challenges and Rewards of a Modern Acting Career

My acting career has been a journey filled with both exhilarating success and daunting challenges. While the term "acting career" may evoke a romanticized image of stardom and success, the reality is often a different story. This is especially true for those of us whose careers have spanned several decades. Looking back, my father, John Cullum, who began his journey in the early 1950s, faced a much different landscape. In 1956, you could actually live in New York City and pay your rent through Shakespearean performances.

Today, the landscape has shifted dramatically. For those over 30, making a decent living from legitimate acting work is nearly impossible. The younger you are, the better your chances. In fact, a talented child can quickly rack up tuition through various acting gigs. For instance, I am currently performing in Shakespeare in Glendale, California, earning a mere 15 dollars per show. This experience, while rich in cultural and performance opportunities, also comes with its challenges.

The Reality of Acting in Modern Times

My financial situation is precarious. While I have an independent means of income, my acting income alone is pitiful. Without any substantial earnings, relying solely on acting would mean living in public housing and relying on food stamps. Yet, even with this limited income, I have accomplished more than 98 percent of my colleagues in SAG-AFTRA. This is a testament to the dedication and resilience required in this field. However, I can assure you that this journey has been incredibly challenging.

For me, acting is not so much a career as a calling.
