Is 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' a Must-Watch or Just Another Season Premiere?

Every week, the world of Star Trek: Lower Decks rejoices as yet another season premiere graces our screens. But how excited are you about this week's episode? For some, it may be a relaxed watch after other priorities like finishing Only Murders in the Building. Others may find it just another season premiere that leaves them with mixed feelings.

Not Watching Until Family Approval

Like many others, I often delay my Star Trek: Lower Decks binges until I've handled all other series, such as Only Murders in the Building, with the full scrutiny of my family and friends. It's a healthy practice to ensure that every episode lives up to the hype and doesn't fall short in quality.

My Take on Star Trek: Lower Decks

While I appreciate the humor and the positive reception Star Trek: Lower Decks has garnered, it's not really my personal cup of tea. I find the Family Guy-style humor borderline annoying, especially in extensive doses. It can be a level of comedy so saturated that it loses its charm. For instance, I only managed to watch Bad Grandpa for about 20 minutes before my patience wore thin. Despite this, I understand that such humor can attract a wide audience and support the broader appeal of the series.

I appreciate Star Trek: Lower Decks for its ability to keep Star Trek on television. It's a necessary evil if we want to see new adventures in the Star Trek universe. While Star Trek: Picard season 3 may worry me due to the potential inclusion of Captain Sisko as a main antagonist, which could negatively impact his legacy, the risks and uncertainties of the series are part of the charm for me.

My View on the Latest Episode

While I don't profess to be a die-hard fan, my excitement for this week's Star Trek: Lower Decks premiere was lukewarm. The episode was somewhat scattered, and the central problem was largely resolved through off-screen actions rather than the lower decks crew taking center stage. Moreover, many unresolved plot points and potential storylines from the previous seasons, such as the Mariners' connection to Andorians, the introduction of rebel Vulcan T' Lynn, and the ongoing tension between Tendi and Ford, were not adequately addressed.

Despite these shortcomings, the show maintains a level of quality that keeps fans engaged. Its attention to detail, dedication to Trek fandom, and clever blend of new concepts and classic Trek references continue to make it one of my favorite shows. Even if this week's episode didn't meet my high expectations, the potential for future episodes and continued fan engagement keeps the series anchored in my favorites list.

Final Thoughts

Is 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' a must-watch? Absolutely, if you're a Trek fan or just enjoy some light, irreverent humor. However, if you're weary of the Family Guy-style jokes or are simply not a fan of the show, it might not be the must-watch for you this week. Just like with any series, your enjoyment ultimately depends on your personal taste and the show's ability to deliver on its promises.
