How Non-Cooperation Can Deter Criminal Activities: The Role of Armed Self-Defense

When discussing the prevention of criminal activities, including robbery, many experts and law enforcement officials often emphasize the importance of community cooperation and safe responses. However, a controversial and intriguing proposition exists: would criminals be more deterred if potential robbery victims were less cooperative and made riskier moves?

The Consequences of Non-Cooperation and Resistance

A risky move is only effective if the majority of the risk is borne by the criminal rather than the victim. For instance, a skilled confrontation with a knife-wielder may result in the victim being slashed, while the criminal faces a high risk of death. The motivations align: the criminal fights for perceived gain, while the victim fights for survival.

However, merely being uncooperative with robbers does not necessarily diminish their risk. A passive resistance, for example, could lead to severe physical harm or even death, as illustrated by the consequences faced by individuals who fail to cooperate with law enforcement.

The Case for Armed Self-Defense

Given the potential dangers, a more robust approach is to arm oneself and receive proper training. A study published in the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of armed resistance in property crimes. According to the findings, armed victims suffered property losses in only 11 cases, and those who used a gun were injured in just 5.5% of the incidents involving defensive gun uses (DGU).

Moreover, in 84% of the cases where the defender was threatened or attacked, it was the criminal who initiated force. Notably, there were no cases where the defender, using a gun, was injured by the attacker. These statistics underscore the significant deterrent effect that armed individuals can have on potential criminals.

Choosing the Right Self-Defense Weapon

The most effective self-defense weapon is not always the most accessible. While knives and canes are highly effective, they require extensive training, often taking years to master. This is where firearms come into play. Pistols, for instance, are easier to learn and highly effective as defensive tools. Doug Marcaida, a highly skilled knife expert, exemplifies the extreme level of skill required.

For the average person, the best course of action is to arm oneself with a pistol and acquire the necessary training. This is not about becoming a skilled fighter but about reducing the risk of injury or death in a dangerous situation.

The Call to Action

Arming ourselves helps to deter criminals and promote personal safety. Criminals are less likely to target those who are prepared to defend themselves. By encouraging more people to carry firearms and receive proper training, we can create a safer environment and reduce the number of crime incidents.
