Henry Cavill and Superman: A Controversial Return

The question of whether Henry Cavill should return as Superman has been a topic of much debate in the world of superhero cinema. Over the past decade, his time as Superman in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) has been marked by criticisms and controversies. From the critiques of Man of Steel to the fan rebellion against the Justice League post-Snyder era, Cavill’s journey from leading man to criticized star in the DCEU has been a rollercoaster.

The Criticisms and Controversies of the DCEU

Man of Steel (2013):

The first film in the DCEU saw Cavill as Superman being criticized for being too modern and having unnecessary ideological elements. The film was panned for its portrayal of Superman, with many viewers and critics finding the character's portrayal too distant and less relatable.

Batman v Superman (2016):

Adding to the woes, Batman v Superman faced even more criticism. Not only for the film’s plot and character development, but also for the “Martha joke” that has become a laughing stock in the realm of superhero film history.

Justice League (2017):

The 2017 Justice League didn't fare much better. The fan reaction was polarized, with some praising it and others dismissing it as a mess. The editing, character development, and the inclusion of a mustache that many fans considered unnecessary were among the major points of contention.

Henry Cavill’s Future in the DCEU

After leaving the Witcher series, a project that he had poured his efforts into and found critical acclaim, landing in the DCEU was his next big opportunity. However, his character’s journey in the DCEU was far from appealing. In Black Adam, he had a post-credit scene that many hoped would lead to a return, but the path ahead in the DCEU didn't look promising.

Henry Cavill’s next step is crucial. While the world of the Warhammer universe offers new horizons, it might be a better fit than returning to the troubled waters of the DCEU. The current state of the DCEU with cancelled or upcoming projects like Batgirl 3, potential boycotts of films like Aquaman 2 due to controversies, and possible sequels of Black Adam struggling due to low profit margins doesn't look like it will improve anytime soon.

The Future of Superman in the Movies

With the current state of the DCEU, it might be better for Henry Cavill to focus on more positive narrative elements. The next Superman film should set a clear tone that defines Superman's character. The previous entries in the DCEU, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, have laid a foundation for who Superman is, but the next film should provide him with more depth and clarity.

Even if Batman v Superman and Justice League could be rebooted, the challenge lies in shifting public opinion. The film’s performance and casting choices have significantly impacted fan reception. Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa, while harder to recast, are crucial for the continuity and growth of the DCEU. Their characters have kept the promise of the cinematic universe alive.

The hope now lies in Rob Pattinson’s independent version of Batman and the potential of a new direction from James Gunn for The Flash. But for Henry Cavill, the best move might be staying away from the current state of the DCEU and focusing on meaningful projects, such as those in the Warhammer universe.

Wouldn't it be better for Henry Cavill to focus on a fresh start that aligns with what he and his fans truly hope for in the next chapter of Superman's life?
