Exploring the World of Screenwriting: From Old West Thrillers to Supernatural Escapes
Have you ever tackled a feature-length screenplay project? If so, like me, you might have a story or two to tell. Over the years, I have had the privilege of writing a variety of screenplays, ranging from thrilling adventures in the Old West to supernatural escapades that alter characters' lives forever. In this article, I'll delve into the process of screenwriting, share some of my personal experiences, and discuss how I helped tailor a script to the elusive and misunderstood Old West setting.
Sharing the Journey of Screenwriting
Throughout my career, I have crafted numerous screenplays, including 15 features, a TV show, and several shorts. Each story is a reflection of my imagination and a testament to the power of storytelling. I find immense satisfaction in transforming abstract ideas into vivid narratives that entertain, evoke emotions, and captivate audiences.
Adapting to the Old West Setting
The task of creating a feature screenplay that captures the essence of the Old West was a unique challenge. The setting provided a rich backdrop for suspense and drama, but the director's lack of understanding of the era presented a steep learning curve. To bridge this gap, I carefully crafted an opening scene that would grab the audience's attention and set the stage for the story to unfold. The opening scene portrayed a bounty hunter riding into town with a trail of murders, slung over saddles, and the entire town coming to a standstill.
The horses floundered up the muddy main street as if the very earth was delaying them, creating a palpable sense of tension and foreboding. This approach allowed us to establish the tone and engage the audience's imagination from the very beginning.
Notable Screenplays
Here are some of the notable screenplays I have written and the stories behind them:
Night Kill
This feature-length screenplay follows a newlywed couple who embark on a cross-country journey in Thailand, accidentally killing someone in the process. As they attempt to cover up their crime, supernatural forces intervene, leading to a series of events that change their lives forever. The film is in Thai with English subtitles, making it a unique and culturally rich viewing experience.
Todd McCoy's Adventure West
"Todd McCoy's Adventure West" won two grand prizes in screenwriting contests and tells the story of a selfish New York City street urchin who, after discovering his friends are to be sold into servitude, is thrown off an Orphan Train in 1872 Wyoming. The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of iconic Old West elements such as rivers, trees, Indians, mountain men, and kidnappers. From this harsh and unforgiving landscape, our protagonist discovers his true self, only to lose everything in the process. He then puts his life on the line to save his friends in a heart-wrenching climax.
Back from the Dead: The True Sequel to Frankenstein
“Back from the Dead: The True Sequel to Frankenstein” made waves in the industry, especially after producers of 'The Sopranos' and 'Boardwalk Empire' expressed interest in the project. This compelling narrative follows the journey of a scientist and his psychologist wife as they revive the "monster" from a two-hundred-year arctic freeze. The creature's 1790s Gothic sojourns offer a fresh perspective on the original Frankenstein story, the fate of his mate, and the desires of those who wish to possess him. This screenplay explores themes of identity, morality, and the consequences of playing God.
Embracing Future Writing Projects
While I haven't ventured into screenwriting for some time, I am eager to return to the craft. The thrill of creating stories that resonate with audiences and push the boundaries of storytelling is something I deeply cherish. Whether it's another thrilling piece in the Old West or a supernatural tale, I am excited to see what the future holds for my screenwriting journey.
