Why Prequels May Not Be the Answer for Star Trek

No, I don't fancy Star Trek prequels. Why? Because they often start from a completely sealed story box, imposing restrictions on the creative process. Writers then have to work around these confines, and often times, the results are not satisfactory. The Star Wars prequels serve as a vivid example of this. They were met with a frosty reception, leaving audiences and critics alike wanting a more seamless narrative connection. Goods stories thrive on an open-ended narrative structure, where the creative process is less restricted. This approach allows for more exploration and innovation, making the storytelling richer and more engaging.

Surak: The Delicate Role of Ancient Philosophers in Star Trek

Speculation about the Pre-warp philosopher Surak has been a topic of discussion in various Star Trek properties, both onscreen and in numerous Star Trek novels. Surak is undeniably one of the most profound philosophers in the history of Vulcan. His teachings have deeply influenced all Vulcans and continue to shape the character of modern Vulcans as we know them. For this reason, I would love to see at least a movie about Surak, possibly even a time travel scenario where other Star Trek characters meet and experience his story. The part of his story revealed in Enterprise was a highlight of that show, giving viewers a rare glimpse into the origins of Vulcan philosophy and its profound impact on the Federation.

Jean-Luc Picard's Early Adventures: The USS Stargazer

While I don't fancy prequels as a rule, I have a special interest in the early adventures of Jean-Luc Picard on the USS Stargazer. I would love to see a show set during the 30 years Picard commanded the Stargazer before he became captain of the Enterprise. The Stargazer books are a treasure trove of intriguing stories, and for Picard fans, a chance to see him in a different light. If a series were created, I hope it would capture the spirit of the original series as it did in Strange New Worlds instead of Discovery. I believe it’s essential to give Picard and his earlier adventures the respectful and passionate treatment they deserve.

The Valiant and the Edge of the Galaxy

Alongside these discussions, I propose a novel idea: a twenty-six-part mini-series about the Voyage of the S.S. Valiant. This proposed series would focus on the journey to penetrate the edge of the galaxy, as hinted at in the first episode of Enterprise. The Valiant represents a significant milestone in Starfleet's history, and as such, deserves to be told with depth and detail. Considering the importance of its voyage, an in-depth exploration of its journey would add value to the Star Trek universe and provide a fascinating narrative for fans and new viewers alike.

Should this series come to fruition, it could stand as a worthy addition to the Star Trek canon, complementing the adventures of the Valiant and the intrepid explorers who embarked on this daring journey.

Any feedback or additional thoughts are most welcome. However, based on my analysis, continuing the story of Enterprise in a manner that complements the original series and fanfiction series "Star Trek: Endeavor" would be preferable. This series, by the writer Rigil-Kent, ignores TATV and focuses on the Trafford team, making it a more appealing proposition for fans of the original cast.
