Confronting Acquaintances as a Deputy Sheriff: Real-Life Encounters and the Art of Policing

As a deputy sheriff, my work is a blend of the everyday and the spectacular. Dealing with people I know or am related to is almost a daily occurrence. Throughout my career, I have encountered numerous instances where I had to navigate the line between personal familiarity and professional duty. These encounters are a testament to the unique challenge of balancing personal connections with the strict codes of conduct that govern law enforcement.

Encountering Known Individuals

During my time in high school, I often joked about having to deal with individuals who were either relatives of my father or classmates of my mother. Even as a young deputy sheriff in the county where I grew up, I frequently run into people I know or am related to, making each shift a potential chuckle or a reminder of the complex web of relationships in the community.

The Case of the Misremembered Deputy County Attorney

One such instance involved a new deputy county attorney who questioned my memory. He asked if I remembered him, to which I replied that I did not. He then asked me to think about it, knowing that he had received a ticket from me for exhibition of acceleration. After some thought, I realized that he was the one who had performed a power stall with poorly maintained tires, which resulted in a violent burnout.

Damning him with the question, “Did you ever check your rearview mirror before taking off?” I received an honest “Obviously not” in response. We continued to talk, and the deputy apologized for the incident, acknowledging his misjudgment. This encounter reinforced the importance of maintaining professionalism and judgment, even when dealing with acquaintances.

The Emergency Tragedy on 42nd St.

Another notable encounter took place in New York City, where I dealt with a driver who admitted to driving the wrong way on West 42nd Street, claiming he was an oncologist rushing to an emergency. Upon checking his license and registration, I discovered that he was actually a gynecologist, contradicting his initial claim. I opted to keep this secret, issuing him a summons and allowing him to continue his journey with the knowledge that I had recognized his dishonesty. This incident highlighted the need to be observant and unyielding even in emergencies.

Professional Struggles and Personal Depths

While my dealings with acquaintances and patients are numerous, there are also instances involving professional difficulties and personal deep dives. For example, while I had been a probation officer, I needed a divorce, which led me to a top attorney who, ironically, turned me down for my case. Interestingly, this same attorney, years later, was subjected to court discipline due to undisclosed practices. The irony was compounded by the fact that his wife, with whom I had previously worked, was present during his court appearance. This experience was not only embarrassing but also a stark reminder of how professionalism can be tested even in personal relationships.

The Art of Policing

Dealing with acquaintances and former colleagues in professional roles, such as my time as a deputy sheriff and my experiences with attorneys and doctors, embodies the complex art of policing. It requires a delicate balance between personal connections, professional decorum, and the unwavering commitment to enforcing laws and ensuring public safety. These encounters serve as a reminder that being a law enforcement officer is not just about enforcing the law, but also about – at times – maintaining a distance that is sometimes difficult to achieve.

The role of a deputy sheriff goes beyond the beats and calls, encompassing the ability to handle situations with skill, integrity, and a deep understanding of human nature. Each encounter, whether with a mischievous youth or a dishonest professional, brings to light the multifaceted nature of policing and the courage it takes to navigate personal and professional boundaries.
