Many students find themselves in situations where they need to study for long hours, often pushing their bodies and minds to their limits. While extended study sessions can seem like the key to mastering vast amounts of material quickly, it's essential to understand the importance of balance and effective strategies to maintain productivity and well-being.

Understanding the Pitfalls of 12 Hour Study Sessions

Remembering my own experience in preparing for my Class 12th boards, I would often study for 12 to 15 hours at a stretch. Those were tough days, with red-rimmed eyes, tangled hairs, and a slightly disheveled appearance. But as tiring as it was, those extended sessions did help me achieve my goals. However, later realized the importance of taking regular breaks and power naps to boost long-term productivity.

I have seen others posting selfies after studying for 12 hours, or even longer, to prove their dedication. Unfortunately, these hours-long study sessions are often exaggerated or unrealistic. People who claim to study non-stop for extended periods must be taking breaks, or they wouldn't retain the information they are learning.

Implementing Short Study Chunks for Optimal Retention

My approach is to break down my study sessions into shorter, more manageable periods. I believe in the power of short study sessions, ranging from 1 to 2 hours, followed by well-deserved breaks. This strategy helps in retaining the information better and making the learning process more efficient.

For instance, in a typical day starting from 9 AM to 12 PM, I manage to study for around 5 to 6 hours. This balanced approach is crucial as I prepare for my upcoming internship and the NEET PG exams. Understanding that it takes more time to cover one topic in an integrated manner, I ensure that I retain the information deeply.

Prioritizing Sleep and Rest

Effective studying is not just about the number of hours spent but also about the quality of those hours. A good sleep schedule is crucial to ensuring that you can retain the information you have learned. While it's tempting to stay up or wake up early to cram, it's better to get adequate rest and return to studies with a fresh mind.

After a sleepless night, some people exhibit signs of exhaustion, while others may look well-rested. For instance, I recall preparing for my OBGY paper 1, and while I did not post a selfie showing my 12-hour studying, I simply wrote an essay on the effectiveness of shorter, more frequent study sessions.

Concluding Thoughts on Mint Mindset

Like anyone else, we all have different mindsets when it comes to studying. Some may appear to be dedicated and hardworking, dedicating 12 to 15 hours a day, while others might study in shorter, more-efficient chunks. It's important to recognize that our dedication lies in our ability to retain and apply knowledge rather than the sheer number of hours spent.

My goal is to learn in a way that is both productive and sustainable, ensuring that I can apply the information I learn even in my dreams. Balancing the workload, incorporating regular breaks, and getting proper sleep are key to maintaining a healthy mind and body while preparing for exams.
