Is Agents of SHIELD Irrelevant Now that It Departed the MCU?

No, not really. Agents of SHIELD is a great show, and even with the ending of its series, no mention of the snap in the season finale indicates that we may be following a separate timeline. Its still an MCU show and it is still canon in the Marvel narrative, continuing to offer relevant and engaging storylines.

The Disappointment of Agents of SHIELD

However, it has to be acknowledged that I've been disappointed by Agents of SHIELD a lot over the years. The show has never fully lived up to its initial expectations and has struggled to maintain relevance to the overall MCU narrative.

Despite this, the first episode of this season has been the most significant disappointment yet. The previous season finale hinted at events from Infinity War. However, the new season takes place one year later without the snap occurring. This indicates a separate timeline, universe, or dimension. While this choice offers some narrative flexibility, it's concerning in terms of maintaining the show's connection to the broader MCU.

Struggles to Connect with Movies

Despite its challenges, the show has attempted to establish a connection with the movies, even if those efforts were generally underwhelming. However, the new season seems to have completely given up on this connection, which is a significant letdown.

The potential to tell stories both connected to the overall MCU while still being unique and independent was missed. The show could explore life after the snap while continuing its own narrative arc. The original Avengers still thrived post-snap, and Agents of SHIELD could have done the same with its main cast at the time of the snap. This missed opportunity adds to the disappointment of fans.

The Future of Agents of SHIELD

My journey as a fan of Agents of SHIELD is coming to a close, and I'm likely to abandon the remaining episodes of this season. The first episode set the tone for what is to come, and it was a letdown by almost any standard. The decision to separate from the primary MCU narrative seems premature and poorly executed, and fans are left to wonder about the intentions behind this narrative shift.

Overall, while the show has shown potential and contributed to the MCU, the recent season's first episode has set a low bar for subsequent episodes. For many fans, this might be the final chapter in our journey with Agents of SHIELD.

As the series draws to an end, it remains a cautionary tale for how important it is to maintain the balance between following established storylines and introducing new and unique narratives. Only time will tell if the upcoming episodes can reverse the current narrative and provide the satisfying conclusion many fans have been hoping for.
