Adding Personality to Your Online Writing

When I first started writing online, the fear of what friends and family would think about my work plagued my early posts. Before I could even see a reaction from a boss, parent, spouse, or friend, I realized my actual challenge was attracting the attention of an ideal reader. The best way to achieve this is by infusing your writing with personal stories, much like you would when speaking to a friend.

Telling Stories That Spark Interest

Personal stories help you connect with your readers on a deeper level, making your content more relatable and engaging. However, to avoid turning your work into a mere journal, always include a takeaway tip or lesson that the reader can apply in their own life. Telling a story effectively requires practice, and a useful template can guide you.

A good template to follow is: 'And after doing X _________ for Y _________ and achieving/failing to achieve Z_________ I realized_________. ' Focus on one story and one takeaway to give yourself a clear structure. Writing a single idea or experience in one post is much more effective than scattering multiple ideas.

Brevity breeds clarity! Keep your stories short and straightforward, and the overall impact will be greater.

Being Authentic in Your Writing

The answer to infusing your writing with personality is straightforward: be yourself. Be honest. Communicate your true thoughts and experiences. Here are additional tips to help you add personality to your online writing:

Share your opinions and experiences to stand out from others. Avoid writing just for the sake of it. Learn to enjoy the writing journey. Write with the intention of providing value, not for viral fame or financial gain. Write everything you know about the topic in one post or content piece to maintain coherence. Avoid overthinking grammar for the sake of perfection; write naturally and refine later.

Remember, the norms are meant to be broken. Make your own norms and stand out. Just put yourself out there and embrace your uniqueness. Thanks for reading!

Transforming from Imitation to Originality

When writing novels online, I initially imitated the styles of my favorite authors to get accustomed to the writing process. However, to truly become a great writer, it's essential to develop a unique writing style. Here are the steps I took to achieve that:

Practice, practice, and more practice until you find your style. Observe people around you and retell their actions in your own words. Incorporate a character from each novel and let them speak as you would in real life.

By following these steps, you can transform your writing from imitation to originality, making your work stand out.
