A Decade Frozen in Time: My 1980s Time Travel Experience

Imagine the excitement of being able to time travel back to the 1980s. For many, this era represents a golden age of pop culture, social norms, and personal experiences. In this article, I'll explore what a typical person might do if they could make a return trip to the glorious decade of the 1980s.

The Nostalgia of the 1980s

Undoubtedly, the 1980s were a fascinating period. Some might argue that it was the 1880s, but I believe that if it were the latter, it would be much harder to adjust. Assuming the 1980s, with my physical body from that era and the benefit of accumulated knowledge, could be an exhilarating experience. The ability to relive those moments with a broader perspective and to correct past mistakes would make the adventure even more fulfilling.

If given a chance, the first thing I would do is listen to the iconic 80s music. Everything from punk rock to pop, heavy metal to new wave, the music genre was vast and diverse. It would be a treat to explore the entire playlist of classics that defined the 80s.

Embracing Simple Pleasures

Another thing on my list would be to drink beer like it was going to be the last for the next day. The simplicity and pleasure of uncomplicated pleasures like this are often forgotten in our fast-paced modern world.

Imagine waking up in the 1980s. For the most part, the decade was a time of new experiences and discoveries. Assuming I could wake up to the 1980s again, I would start the decade in high school. High school is a period of significant emotional, social, and personal growth. I would develop meaningful friendships, enjoy dating, get my first car, and enjoy my family.

Rediscovering the Simple Joys

Being free from the constraints of modern technology, such as mobile phones, would allow me to experience those simple freedoms anew. I would take more chances and be more serious about living, yet not take life too seriously. The 80s were defined by a sense of adventure and discovery.

I would spend more time with my grandparents, truly understanding the gravity of their time with me. Questions and emotional expressions like ‘I love you’ would become a regular part of our interactions. Far from speeding in my car, I would prioritize safety and cherish every moment with my loved ones.

Addressing Past Mistakes

Besides these positive experiences, I would also try to correct past mistakes. This would include seeking out and befriending those lonely, left out students in high school. The 80s were a time of social dynamics, and being more inclusive could make a significant impact on the lives of others.

The broader view on possibilities and increased confidence would be crucial. Although I was kind during my first ‘80s visit, this time around, I would make a conscious effort to be even more kind and understanding. The theme of the decade would be personal growth and a commitment to making the best of the opportunity.

As the decade came to a close, I would end it by entering graduate school, embarking on a new decade of discoveries and learning. The 1980s would be a second chance to relish the joys of that most glorious time in my life.
